8. I've done some of the reading
9.Yes
10.Postings: Aldous HuxleyMy whole take on Aldous Huxley is that he was right about somethings that havecome to pass. But that is not to say that we should be afraid of overpopulation(happening), over organization, propaganda. We should'nt be afraid ofor surroundings, our children, the cars we drive or the music on our IPODS.Freedom is necessary for a productive society but it also allows a nonproductive society to evolve.Freedom is a good thing (a privilege),but it also enables evil to be free. Like everything in life we let the good in with the bad. I think he was scared forus or maybe he just scared himself.
I had to watched this movie twice and I still did'nt really understand it, but here goes. I think the madman in the movie represent the human race? He kept calling us murderers, that we killed God. I think he says that because we abuse the land, air, ocean and we create war.I think he is thinking "how could God create a land of plenty and just stand by and watch it be destroyed by hunger, polution, sickness and greed. He is screaming from the top of his lungs all day long "WHERE HAS GOD GONE"? In a last chance effort to wake us up before its to late. And thats why he does'nt believe that God exist and that in the midst of everything we must have killed him. I also think its blastphemous when he says that they should become Gods.
Charles Darwin- Autobiography Naturally SelectedI read the autobiography of Charles Darwin,I found him to be funny, serious, and awkward. Funny in the sense that he said, "I have an ample leisure from nothaving to earn my own bread". He said it in the begining of the book aboutschool when he could'nt find his nitch on what he wanted to be. He was hisbrothers chemistry assistant where he got the nickname "GAS". His father paidfor his education and all he wanted to do was go on excurtions and vacation. Thesecond time he said it was at the end of the book, I think it was to let thereader know that he had a good time he was amused at doing what he loved and hada great passion for nature. He was really serious about books, bugs and plant life. Those things held his intrest from a young boy to the end of his life. In school you could alwaysfind him reading, Wonders of the World, Shakespeare, Thompsons Seasons andpoetry from Byron and Scott. As far as his education he went he attendedEdinburg, and Cambridge University where he was studing to become an doctor. Healso found he loved music, geology. He never became a doctor because he did'ntlike medical science and because he could'nt dissect worth a crap. He did manythings in his life, he wrote books, went on voyages and he was in outstandingcompany. He is one of my favorite philosphers to date.
Survival of the Sufficient-Shor film week 3Survival of the SufficientNatural editing or survival of the sufficient? "If you remain you have beenedited". That means, we have all been influenced (edited). This part for sureis true. What I got from watching this film was that we are not reallyourselves. We are an amalgamation of all things, bits and pieces of people andcircumstances that we have come across in our lifetime. We can never know whatit is to be ourself be cause of all the editing that has happened during thecourse of our life. So what we are is what we are, and this is subject tochange.
Richard Dawkins the strangness of scienceI thought Richard Dawkins was very engaging and hella funny in a stange andqueer sort of way. He makes you think about things that you wouldnt evenconsider in any given day. I especially liked when he said, "Everytime youdrink a glass of water, least one molecule has passed through the bladder OliverCromwell". The audience loves it and he chalkes it up to elementary probabilitytheory. He goes on to say that philosphy is imagination or parts of it at least. The way the mind ponders things. He also makes use of another funny story aboutMajor Albert Stubblin III, and how he thinks he can go through the wall becauselike the wall he too is made of atoms. How crazy is that? When I was watchingthe lecture i would never think that I could have breath in something thatsomeone or something just exhaled. All in all a very good =).
Little things that JiggleIn the short film Little Things that Jiggle, Richard Feyman(1918-1988)istelling us that everything is made up of little things and when all these thingsare combined they turn into big things. In the first few seconds of the film heshows the 4 main elements: Hydrogen, Oxygen, Gold, Uranium, all are very tinybut when combined they make up these mathmatic formulas. The film quotes"Science is Alchemy without Superstition", I looked up alchemy, I means anymagical power or process of transmitting a common substance usually of littlevalue into a substance of great value. The part about the H-bomb was very dramatic. All those tiny atoms of Hydrogencombined made the enormous blast and changed the direction of science andmankind forever. That was truly "Science Is Vision Multiplied". My favoritepart of the film is the quote from Albert Einstein he said, "It should bepossible to explain physics to a barmaid". I agree.
Albert Einstein Philosophy I &III really enjoyed this story of Albert Einstein. Growing up I knew of him andhis "Theory of Relativity", but I never knew about him in the personal sense.Like that he fell in love with the only girl in his physics class. They had adaughter but she was given up for adoption, then finally got married and had twomore kids(boys). The story also bittersweet, because of his "FAME" he had notime for his family which resulted in divorce. He had a love affair wih hiscousin(eeeewh). That relationship resulted in marriage. He struggle for mostof his life on his Unified Field Theory. Everytime it failed he would bediscouraged and the scientist that we assisting him gave up altogether.I think that the young physcist described him best. "luminary shinning inhelpless isolation. I think Albert Einstein has made the greatest contributionto science and he has inspired Lisa Randall to pick up where he left off.
Lisa Randall-LectureThe title is Understanding The World Around Us, I watched the interview twiceand I'm more confused than ever. But she did open my mind to believing thatthere might be a possible 4th dimension, even a 5th. Something that is so small or so vast that we are unable to see it. I never even considered gravity to bea weak force, but I guess here on earth it is. I don't know what string theoryis or warpped space time, branes, but I hope to find out a little more. She haspeaked my curiosity about Time, Right/Left, Forward/Backward, Up/Down and thelarge Hedron Accelorator that can see these branes and particles that she talkesabout.I am hoping that by the end of this course I will have less confusion and moreunderstanding.
Edward O. Wilson on Creation Edward O. Wilson want to bridge the gap between evangelicals and scientist andhe is using the current state of the earth to do it. He uses terms like GlobalWarming, Emmisions Control, Rain Forest to helpsend his message. He calls on the Evangelist because of their large numbers andstrong belief in religion, afterall, they are the stuarts of the planet not thespoilers. In his message of help he give some facts on the earths future. He states that by the end of this century 1/2 the plants and animals that are onthe brink of extinction now will be gone. He goes on to say that the climatechange alone will reduce the remaining plants and animals to 1/4. He does give us some answers on what to do. 1.Define what the problem is, 2.What are theconsequences, 3.How do we fix it, 4.(can't do 1-3 w/o this one)How much will itcost(MONEY)? I know that this is a good effort, but I dont think it is up to one specific group of people to fix it. It is all our responsibility.
Does God ExistYES!I believe in God the father almighty creator of heaven and earth, and of allthing seen and unseen. Blake says yes it is a matter of believing and faith. Davis is just straight forward he really did'nt have to think about it, Yes Goddoes exist. I especially like Dumomt's answer the best because Dumont thinksGod is Female. =)
Existance Preceds EssenceIn this Java film The Existance Preceeds Essence the message is that there arealways two choices each having there own regrets. In the film there is a scenein which two people are in a chess game but the one person has no where to movegiving the feeling of being trapped. Sometimes in life we feel we are trapped. The film also reflects on Old Age as being the dreams of youth. I think inretrospect that is true. Young or Old we do reflect in hind site. Either waywe all have regrets because although life is good, It's not and will never be perfect.
The Death of SocratesI found this short story on Socrates to be interesting. Socrates is on trialfor his life. The charges brought against him are: Not believing in the Gods recognized by the state, and for the corruption of Athenians youth. It reminded me of the persecution and imprisonment and the death of Jesus(later on in time). Rememeber how Jesus was imprisioned for claiming to be theson of man and for his teachings. In "The Apoligia he is a 70 year old man that has never been in trouble letalone inside a court room. He never admits or denies any of the charges setagainst him and yet he is still accepting of his death sentence. Because heknows he will be going to a better place. In "The Crito, I'm not to sure if his friend Crito is trying to talk him into committing suicide or escape. But again Socrates known that it's morally wrong to return evil for evil."The Phaedo-The last day of life. He is talking with friends about the soul. That how even in death the soul is immortal. Then right before he dies he givesa death decree a kind of penance to rid his conscience of all debts here onearth. In modern cultures we still pratice that tradition for the dying, itcalled The Last Rights.
Owen GingrichOwen Gingerich on Astronomy, God and Jesus, He is a scientist who is religous. Synergy; the interaction of two or more agents or forces so that there combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effect... In the interview he states that there is evidence of design and purpose. Carbon and Oxygen make life possible and our basic component is carbon. These eliments are found in abundace which enables us to live. I think it is safe to say that he believes that God created this world and all that is in it to our specific design. The scientific part is to study and understand. He goes on to say that the personal God that we know is a fraction of how big he really is and that the life of Jesus is more of what God is like. He makes a funny point about skeptics, that they are all men of faith, meaning that we all need to believe in something.. This was a great interview to watch.=)
Evolution and PhilosophyEvolution and philosophy...go together. . Philosophy gives us the space tothink about ideas and to form opinions about those ideas. Philosophy also givesthe concepts for further inquiry. Evolution is the proof that explainsincomprehensible patterns, observations and new fields of inquiry. Evolutionarytheory has made a great impact in the study of biology. To understand evolution we need to know that everyone and everything isevolving. The great thing about biological evolution is that in my family mycousin and I share the same grandmother and as we grow up and have our ownfamilies we can still share that common bond. The only bad thing aboutevolutionary theory is that if it ever had to begin again it would be different. There is a huge possiblity that we would be different.
Assigned Reading SociobiologyHaving read the article I would have to say that I disagree with what it saysabout our behavior being genitically transmitted. I think our behavior islearned and that has to do with nuturing. I think some of our traits arecarried over genitically, like our physical features, but some of us do notbehave the way our parents would. The article goes on to talk about Sociopaths. The author uses words like alturism and selfishness which are by definitionthe two main characteristics fo a sociopath. It goes on to say that there aretwo kinds of sociopaths. (1)Selfish Cheater, (2)Unselfish Cooperator. So one is a user, strong, dominate, and the other is submissive and more willing toplease. It would be reasonable
11. Lisa Randall thinks there are many more dimensions because gravity is a very weak element here on earth and she thinks that it is stonger somewhere else. (B) Yes she has this large Hedron Accelerator that can see particles that we are not able to see, and measure the strengths and weakness of gravity.
12. His philiosophical view are : he claimed to be an expert of fate of the soul after death, he thought the soul was immortal and went through a series of reincarnations. He also reduced all meaning to a numerical and purposed that all existing objects are fundelmentally made of form and not of material substance
13.Are Science and Religion Compatible?this is a complicated question.. because religion is based on a belief system and is passed on through the generations. Science tries to disprove those beliefs. But opposites attract. (Friedman U.C. Davis)Science is a traditional enemy of traditional religion. Science is based on a beliefs that have been tested. Religion is based on untested beliefs. (Matson U.C. Berkeley)
14. Socrates was put on trial for not believing in the "Gods" recongnized by the state, for corupting the Athens youth. The way he defended his position was that he keep quiet never admitting guilt or innocents.
15. The History of PhilosophyThe Eytmology of the word Philosophy is Greek; the term Philo means(to love or befriend) and Sophia means (wisdom). So Philosophy means to "Love Wisdom"(Wikipedia Philosophy Portal)The history of philosophy dates back to ancient Greek times. Under the catagory of Western Philosophy there are 4 subcatagories.1)Ancient Philosophy, which started in the Greek cities around (535 B.C.). Many great teachers asn well as great thinkers arose from that era. Socrates(469 B.C. -399B.C), he is considered to be the founder of western philosophy. Heraclitus(535B.C. - 475B.C.), he regarded himself to be a "self taught and a pioneer of wisdom"). In that same period there were also Pluralist/Atomist.2)Medevil Philosophy that started roughly from the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century A.D. to the Renassance of the 16th century. Its greatest concern was the nature of God. Among the contributors of the existance of God were; Aristotal(384 B.C.-322B.C.) and St. Thomas Aquinas(1225A.D.-1274A.D.)3)Modern Philosophy or The Age of Reason, it was also called The Age of Rationalism. Modern Philosophy is post midevil through specific time periods leading up to the 20th century. Among the modern philosophers of that time are; Erasmus(Oct 28, 1446/1469- July 12, 1536), he was a Dutch Renaissance Humanist, a Catholic priest, and a Theologian of that time. Machiavelli(May 3, 1469-June 21, 1527) he was a philosopher/writter, and considered to be one of the main founders of Political Science. Galileo Galilei(Feb 15, 1564 - Jan 8, 1642) he was a physicist, mathmatician, astronomer and philosopher, inventor of the telescope, he is often refered to as the "Father of Astronomy".4)Lastly we have Contemporary Philosophy, which is western philosophy in its present form. It begins with the rise of Analytic/Continental Philosophy. For the conteporary we will begin with Edmund Gustuv Albrecht Husserl(April 8, 1859 - April 26, 1938) he is the founder of Phenomenology. He believed that "experience is the source of all knowledge". And for the Analytic we have Fredrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege(Nov 8, 1848- July 25, 1925), a german mathmatician he is considered to be the "Father of Analytic Philosophy".These are the 4 catagories of Western Philosophy from the ancient time to somewhat of the present day.All information gathered for this report was furnished by (Wikipedia History of Philosophy). assigned reading from week 1.
16. The big bang is the age of the universe. It is the theorized expotential expansion of the universe at the end of the grand unification epoch 10-36 seconds after the "big bang" driven by a negative pressure vaccum energy density.(wikipedia), It is important to understand astromomy because you need to know the general relativity of space. It is important to know astronomy because science deals with what we know and philosophy deals with what we think, also astronomy can tell us about planetary motion and to predict eclipes, or the trajectory of comet.
17. Heisenberg's view on philosophy and science were not influenced by the doctrines of professionial philosophers. While Einstein believes that everything in the world could be measured and the future predicted according to the laws of physics. They both used sources of neo-Kanthism, conventionalism, and logical empiricism.
18.Richard Dawkins came up with this term to describe the evolutionary theory of language quality and thought. In his opening statements he gave a description of what a meme is; they are ideas, trends, clothes fashions, catch phrases. If find it true because, that is how ideas turn into reality. It is my opinion that this theory has not been proven by any scientific standard of investigation.
19. Because it is the history of looking at life through patterns and changes over time. It helps us to understand human thought and behavior. As species of the same genus have usually, though by no means invariable, some similarity in habits and constitution, and always in structure, the struggle will generally be more severe between species of distinct genera (Charles Darwin excerpts from Darwin's On Origin of Species)
20. Because he see's the Creationist as radical fanatics, protesting against evolution that we did not evolve from apes, but that we were created by a Superior Being. I do not agree with this because it is my own personal belief that we were created by God and that he created us in his own image. I believe he designed us to in this manner to adapt and survive on this planet and this planet only.
21. The disagree with each other on religion. Edward O. Wilson does not believe in God. Although he was brought up in church as a Southern Baptist. He believes it is false reasoning to believe in a biological God. Owen Gingrich believes we were created by Intellagent Design, because the way the earth is set up and the way we are design. The earth is made up of carbon and oxygen and we need that for survival. I think that Edward O. Wilson is the more persuasive in his reasoning because although he does not believe in God, he still see' s the big picture in saving the earth and wants to combine the two super powers (science and religion) to save the earth.
22.He believes that we are a witness to what is not yet the ending of the "cold war" or the passing of a particular period of post war history, but an end to history . That is the end points of mankins ideological evolution and universalization of western liberal democracy as the final form of human government. Although he gives two ends of history 1.a cosmic sense of end-Big Bang Theory where I think that means the earth just explodes . 2. Human nature the end of science. I do agree with him in his second reason because we still start wars and because of scientific advances we have the technology and the weapons to anilate other contries, and we also so much poverty and sickness in the world.
23. That we desire to know what we don't know. That truth and purity is not as it seems. That God does exist and the he is the absoluteMaximality oneness, he is the beginging and the end of all finite things.
24. We killed God by poluting the planet , by living by our own rules, by creating religions that are not based on God. By serving ourselves for our own purpose, by not helping others in need. We killed God by worshiping money and worshiping ourselves.
25. Physics and Philosophy are natural partners because they both explain and understanding of the world. Philosophers in the ancient world were very much interested in astronomy, math, and physics. Mainly that it is important to know theory and science. Philosophy is the premis and physics is the proof.
26. To have freedom of religion one must also have freedom from religion; I think this means that religion is not required to exist and that there are many religions to choose from but you need not participate or believe.
27.According to Dawkins God existance is "psychological appeal."and that God is a meme with a high survival value because God has been replicated over and over with spoken and written word, and by great music and art. "God exist only in the form of a meme with high survival value, or inefective power, in the enviroment provided by human culture(Richard Dawkins chapter 11 the Selfish Gene")
28. I believe the answer to that is yes. There are mysteries of the bible that have not been solved, like when God made the bet with the devil that his faithful servant Job would stay faithful after losing his wealth, health and family. Science the 4th and 5th dimension do they exist? Is gravity more stonger there than here?
29. Understanding cellular automata; Simple programs/simple rules
30. When he was 8 his taste for natural history and collecting was well developed. He had a very hard time with choosing a career. He strated as a medical student at Cambridge University and was not very interested in the medical part, he then went off to seminary to become a clergyman. But i think his non belief in god kept him from attending. The key turning point was the voyage of the Beagle because as he states was the decision that determined his whole career.
31. Spooky Physic is an implication of quantum theory that is still debated to this day. I think neither of them won, its a tie. They both gave very good arguments. Bohr felt his explanation was correct because he used statistics to prove that the same patterns happend over and over. On the other hand Eistein thought that the theory relied to much on statistics and that there could be a better explanation. This book was really hard for me to follow.
32. Evolutionary philosophy is a way to relate evolution: It relates to our devlopment, to how we live, how we interact w/society and how we think about our place in existance.(The Journal of Evolutionary Philosophy)
33. Greogor Mendel: I was really bored with the whole Hybrid thing. I actually found the brief history of his life to be more interesting. The future of information and memory was interesting, before reading it, I only knew of a gigabyte, now I know that my IPOD has more of a memory capcity than I do. Bytes, bytes, bytes.Alfred Russel Wallace: I found his article a little slow but very educational. I never knew about proportion in the animal world, and why larger animals are not in as much abundance as smaller ones.
